In a network, a switch is a device that channels incoming data from any of multiple input ports to the specific output port that will take it toward its intended destination. Switches are the foundation of most business networks. A switch acts as a controller, connecting computers, printers, and servers to a network in a building or a campus. The devices in a network are communicating with each other and also with other networks with the help of switches.

There are two basic types of switches to choose from as part of your networking basics: managed and unmanaged. An unmanaged switch works out of the box but can’t be configured. Home-networking equipment typically offers unmanaged switches. A managed switch can be configured. You can monitor and adjust a managed switch locally or remotely, giving you greater control over network traffic and access.

A wide range of network switches are available from low-end unmanaged switches to high-end 100G chassis-based devices.

Routers are the networking devices which can connect multiple computer networks via wired or wireless connections. Network router can receive, analyze, perform the traffic directing functions and forwards data packet from one network to its destination node. A router is a device that forwards packets between networks by processing the routing information included in the packet.

Network routers have become sophisticated devices capable of many functions beyond routing. More customers are now deploying network routers that can deliver integrated services and multiple applications, like voice, video, data and Internet access, and wireless.

An access point is a device that creates a wireless local area network, or WLAN, usually in an office or large building. An access point connects to a wired router, switch, an Ethernet cable, and projects a Wi-Fi signal to a designated area.

A WAF or Web Application Firewall helps protect web applications by filtering and monitoring HTTP traffic between a web application and the Internet. It typically protects web applications from attacks.

A WAF is a protocol layer 7 defense (in the OSI model), and is not designed to defend against all types of attacks. This method of attack mitigation is usually part of a suite of tools which together create a holistic defense against a range of attack vectors.

By deploying a WAF in front of a web application, a shield is placed between the web application and the Internet. While a proxy server protects a client machine’s identity by using an intermediary, a WAF is a type of reverse-proxy, protecting the server from exposure by having clients pass through the WAF before reaching the server.

A WAF operates through a set of rules often called policies. These policies aim to protect against vulnerabilities in the application by filtering out malicious traffic. The value of a WAF comes in part from the speed and ease with which policy modification can be implemented, allowing for faster response to varying attack vectors; during a DDoS attack, rate limiting can be quickly implemented by modifying WAF policies.
